Meal Pattern: Crediting Yogurt as Fluid Milk
February 2, 2023
Yogurt is a good source of vitamin D, calcium, protein, and many other nutrients. Yogurt is creditable in the Child and Adult Care Food Program as long as the yogurt served does not have more than 23 grams of sugar per 6 ounces. Now, that we know it is creditable, under what food component(s) can you credit yogurt for it to be reimbursable in the CACFP? Â
Take a minute to hear from our nutrition education specialist, Isabel Ramos-Lebron, MS, RDN, LD, as she explains how yogurt credits in the CACFP for various age groups.

- Allowing yogurt to substitute fluid milk once per day for adults offers greater flexibility to the menu planner and will help encourage consumption of a calcium rich food among adult participants. Yogurt may not be substituted for fluid milk for children of any age. This is because milk provides a wealth of nutrients growing children need, such as vitamin A and D, and comparable quantities of these nutrients are not currently found in commercially available yogurts.Â

- For adult participants: Yogurt may be served in place of milk once per day. A serving of milk is optional at supper.
